Webloog as a Blogger.com alternative

On the advice of a roommate, I've given Webloog a try for the turn-key publishing solution I use for this blog. I've since stopped, because it's garbage. Well, not really, but it's not quite up to par with Blogger's reliability and ease of use. Here's another fancy list, because we really never can have enough of those around:

Webloog is cool because:

  • It has categories, Blogger doesn't.
  • It doesn't impose that omnipresent bar at the top of your blog
  • It has niftier themes, although the colors could be better.
Blogger is much better because:

  • The WYSIWYG editor actually works.
  • Spellchecker.
  • Quick-preview.
Now go play outside.

  • I have to agree.

As a Wordpress-user on my personal blog, I am curious to see what will become of Wordpress MU (Multiuser), the software Webloog is running. However, it seems they're running an Alpha-release of WPMU at this time. Wordpress.com is also offering this service on an invite-only basis. They're not open yet to the public, showing that way that their service is not stable yet. Webloog doesn't mention this, even though it's very clear they're running the same release, or maybe an even older one.

My 2 cents summarized: keep watching Wordpress MU. And wait for a stable release.

  • A couple of days ago, someone was so kind to pass me an invite for WordPress.com. I'm located at jan.wordpress.com. I have been able to compare webloog.com and WordPress.com and it seems to me the first is running outdated software. I do not know how often Webloog updates itself, but my guess would be one could better use WordPress.com, for two reasons:

    1. WordPress.com does not have ads. Webloog does.
    2. The WordPress-developers are located at WordPress.com, which is why the software over there gets updated frequently. This is important, because there is no stable release of WordPress MU yet.
